An 82-year-old woman from Mthatha has been arrested on allegations of fraud involving the Road Accident Fund (RAF).
Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana says Mavis Ganyaza appeared before the Mthatha Specialised Commercial Crimes court on Wednesday where she was released on a warning.
She says on the 22nd of January 2020, a family member of Ganyaza was involved in a minibus accident, sustaining serious injuries.
WO Mhlakuvana says the victim approached attorneys in Mthatha to lodge a claim with RAF on her behalf.
She says in December 2021, she made inquiries about her claim and was informed by her lawyers that the money was already paid into a bank account.
The victim reported the matter to the Hawks as she did not know the account.
WO Mhlakuvana says the investigation then revealed that the compensation of R255 000 was deposited into Ganyaza's account.
She says the investigation further exposed that Ganyaza submitted documents to the attorneys pretending to be the rightful claimant.
The 82-year-old must be back in court on 29 January 2024.
