Mossel Bay fisherman, Andries Stander, reeled in a giant cod from the local waters that tipped the scale at 57.8kg.
Stander said he was fishing at Third Beach in Dana Bay on Sunday, and had a “Spottail pinfish” on the hook when he felt a bite at around noon.
He told Algoa FM news that he was actually hoping to catch “Galjoen.”
“It took about 45 minutes to reel her in but unfortunately she didn’t make it. I always put big fish back into the water but we realised that she was dead when we took her out of the water,” Stander said.
He said the giant fish was in his freezer.
“We will prepare the meat for fish nuggets and so on,” he added.
