A Port Elizabeth woman has been arrested on a charge of child abandonment.
This, after her six week old baby was found in water in Missionvale on Sunday morning by members of the local community.
Its alleged that the woman had been drinking with friends on Saturday night and while on her way had allegedly stumbled and dropped the child.
She apparently got up and went home, leaving the child behind.
Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, says the woman believed that she had left the child with friends.
She says the baby is in a serious condition in hospital.
