Metro confirms cholera case in Gqeberha

A case of cholera has been confirmed in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

A resident from Walmer Township in Gqeberha was admitted to the hospital on the 3rd of December where she was isolated.

The metro's Deputy Director for Municipal Health Services Dr Patrick Nodwele believes the case is isolated as no other cases have been reported.

Contact tracing was done on the patient to identify the possible source of the infection and to limit the spread of the disease

He says the Metro is conducting a cholera surveillance program in wastewater for early detection of cholera cases in the community.

Dr Nodwele says this will allow role players to get responses ready.

Is our water safe?

The Metro has advised the community to be alert.

Dr Nodwele says they believe there is currently little reason for the community to be concerned about drinking water as it undergoes strict treatment processes.

He adds that regular tests are done every week for compliance with health standards, and so far there water has shown no contamination or cause of concern.

Residents are encouraged to contact 041 506 5400 to report any suspected cases or if they have any enquiries.

Earlier this year, 43 people died from Cholera in five of the country's provinces.
