The Eastern Cape Health Department is still counting the cost of a fire that engulfed a nursing home at a clinic in Cofinvaba, destroying medicines as well as their belongings.
Health Department spokesperson, Mkululi Ndamase, said mystery still surrounds the cause of Sunday's fire at Ncora Clinic.
He said the blaze destroyed the three-room building that included a staffroom, tea room, and medicine storeroom.
Ndamase said there were no injuries nor were any lives lost.
He said the medicine stock which was received last week, will have to be replenished.
Eastern Cape MEC for Health Nomakhosazana Meth said she was saddened by the incident.
“We are grateful that no one was killed or injured by the fire. We sympathise with the workers who lost their belongings. The department will organise counselling for all of the affected workers to help them deal with this ordeal,” she said.
Meth said they want to also appeal to the community to be more understanding as there might be a shortage of medicine as large quantities were destroyed.
“The medicines that were burnt had just arrived last week from the depot. More medicine will be ordered so as to ensure that our people don’t default on their treatment,” she said.
