Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has apologised to the families of the 18 people who were murdered in a brutal attack on two homes in a village in Lusikisiki last Friday night.

The Minister met relatives in Lusikisiki on Tuesday where he also told a public meeting that he met with the relatives of the victims who complained about crime and demanded better policing.

Minister Mchunu said that the families shared their grief and pain and also spoke their mind after the heinous incident.

"We accept their criticism, we except their views, we understand the situation. What we want to say as the Department of Police, we are sorry that at the hour when those people needed us we were not there, and we couldn't be there to protect them.

"They defenceless, they were not armed, they were not expecting anything. So, I understand when people express themselves and say they need better policing. That I accept, that is our work," he told the grieving community.

Meanwhile, National Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, told a media briefing that a person of interest is being questioned in connection with the murders.

"At this stage, we know who we are looking for. We do have one person of interest for questioning, (but) he's not under arrest at this stage but have a direction."

General Masemola said that a team has been assembled with both national and provincial expertise to conduct the investigation.
