The damage caused to a car carrier that berthed in Gqeberha this week due to severe weather conditions is said to run into millions of rands.
The vessel is currently in the Port of Port Elizabeth.
Algoa FM News has reliably learned that the hydraulic systems on several floors failed in rough seas and collapsed on cars, trucks, and other equipment.
It is understood that most of the damaged goods have been hauled out and stored in warehouses on the quay-side.
National spokesperson for the SA Maritime Safety Association, Tebogo Ramatjie confirmed there was an "incident" with the car carrier.
"The vessel sustained serious damage and an inspection is being conducted to assess the extent of the damage," he said.
