Gqeberha police are investigating cases of armed robbery and attempted murder following a shooting incident in unit 9 in Motherwell on Monday morning.
Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, said a 63-year-old man providing an escort to a meat truck was grazed on the head when shots were fired during a scuffle with three men.
“It is alleged that at approximately 09:45, a meat truck was being escorted by a Nissan panel van, and on arrival at the local chain store, the truck entered the secured receiving site.
The driver of the escort vehicle, aged 63, was monitoring the area when he was approached by three suspects,” Janse Van Rensburg said.
She said a scuffle ensued between the driver and the suspects and multiple shots were fired.
“The driver sustained a graze wound at the back of his head. The suspect fled with his firearm, cell phone, and wallet. He was transported to hospital for treatment.”
Janse Van Rensburg said police also suspect that the body of an unknown man was found in nearby Njakazi Street, with gunshot wounds, and may be one of the suspects.
An inquest was opened for further investigation.
