A 47-year-old man has been jailed for life for raping a 13-year-old child and attempting to rape her 11-year-old friend in a Pretoria Hotel in 2020.
Amos Thulani Khumalo was sentenced in the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
A spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Lumka Mahanjana says Khumalo saw the children walking from the shops in Atteridgeville on the 20th of November 2020 and forced them into his car.
She says he then drove them to a restaurant in Pretoria where he ordered them to get alcohol.
Mahanjana says when they refused he went to get alcohol for himself and took them to a Pretoria Hotel where he booked them in, pretending to be their father.
She says when they got to the room he assaulted both children and proceeded to rape the 13-year-old but her friend managed to escape.
Khumalo chased and caught up with his victim but a security guard had already heard her scream for help.
He was apprehended and handed over to the police.
At the time of the rape, Khumalo was out on parole for a seven-year prison sentence, also for rape.
