The body of an unknown man dressed in his diving suit washed up at Sardinia Bay beach in Gqeberha early on Wednesday morning.

Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said police were alerted to the incident at around 08:15.

She said members of the community, SAPS divers, and the K9 search and rescue team assisted in retrieving the man's body.

The deceased is an African male estimated to be in his thirties.

"He had an open wound to the back of his head, however, the cause of death will only be determined once a postmortem is done.

"SAPS Walmer detectives have opened an inquest," Janse van Rensburg said.

Anyone who can assist in tracing the man's family or who may be able to identify him is asked to contact SAPS Walmer on 082 442 1514.

Information can also be shared via the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or at any police station.

All information received is handled confidentially, and callers may opt to remain anonymous.

In April, several bodies washed ashore, with some wearing diving gear.
