Gqeberha police opened an inquest docket after a man in his late twenties was fatally wounded by police in Motherwell on Wednesday.
Captain Andre’ Beetge said members of the national intervention unit had followed up information about a man who was in possession of an unlicensed firearm in unit 11 in Motherwell.
He said they proceeded to the address on Nkume Street and when the door to the house was opened, the suspect saw police and pointed a gun at them.
Beetge said police “hit back” and the suspect succumbed to his injuries.
He also specifically noted that the suspect was not linked to a robbery at a jewellery store in the Greenacres Shopping Centre on Monday but said that police investigation is ongoing.
Beetge said police seized a firearm and ammunition that was found in the man’s possession, as well as a signal jammer found inside the house.
He said the docket will be transferred to police watchdog body, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate for further investigation.
Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner Major General Vuyisile Ncata thanked the community for “sharing valuable information” with the police.
