The Kariega man who allegedly staged his kidnapping last week made a brief appearance in the local magistrates court on Tuesday.
Xolile Douw, 52, dressed in a green jacket, formal pants, and shoes, appeared confused as he entered the fully packed courtroom.
According to the Hawks provincial spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, Douw was arrested at his cousin's house in Kwanobuhle where he was found hiding under wooden pallets.
During court proceedings, Douw heard that he does not qualify for Legal Aid as he is a teacher and would have to appoint his lawyer.
The state also told the court that it would oppose any bail application unless Douw could provide a verifiable address.
The matter was rolled over to Wednesday to allow Douw time to consult the person with whom he intends to stay.
