Closing arguments in the long-running firearms trial of EFF leader Julius Malema and co-accused, Adriaan Snyman, has been postponed in the East London regional court.

Malema, and security company director, Snyman were “charged with the unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, discharge of a firearm in a built-up area failure to take reasonable precaution to person or property and reckless endangerment to person or property.”

National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali, said the matter returns to court on 9 December.

“Despite her health, Magistrate Twanet Olivier, postponed the matter in chambers by agreement, in the absence of the accused persons and the defence.

“The matter had been due in court today for the state and defence to present closing arguments after the defence closed its case,” he said.

Tyali said the firearm that Malema allegedly fired at an EFF rally in Mdantsane in 2018, allegedly belongs to a company where Synman is the director.

Last year, the prosecution closed its case, having led the evidence of 19 witnesses.
