Several roads in parts of the Eastern Cape have been blockaded by protesting scholar transport operators who say they have not been paid by the provincial government.
The Eastern Cape Transport Department says roads around Matatiele, Maluti and eMaxesibeni, formerly Mount Ayliff, have been closed, with trucks being used to enforce the blockade in some places.
Spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said the R61 between Cofinvaba and Komani is also closed due to protest action.
He says only two district municipalities are being affected by protest action by scholar transport operators who say they have not been paid.
Meanwhile, the SA National Taxi Council (SANTACO) in the Eastern Cape says its members are not taking part in any shutdown in the province today.
Provincial coordinator, Gabs Mtshala, said they're not aware of the reasons for the action, nor were they part of any meeting where such a decision was taken.
In January, SANTACO indicated that its members were owed millions in arrears.
