Long-term weather warning of another El Nino signature

An intense frontal system will move through the Eastern Cape this afternoon.

The PE Branch of the SA weather service is warning that this will result in strong to gale force coastal winds accompanied by light rain showers and snow over the high ground, which can be disruptive in places.

The effects of the system will  be over by late tomorrow morning and the outlook for the weekend is generally sunny.

Meanwhile: The latest long term forecast shows a strengthening El Nino signature. This means that generally rainfall should be below the norm for the rest of the year, peaking in December.

The Weather Office says although the Eastern Cape has enjoyed good winter rains, the outlook for the summer season does not look promising and consumers are advised to use water sparingly.

After last weekend's heavy rains, Nelson Mandela Bay's main supply dams were at a combined 85% of capacity. All dams were overflowing earlier this week, with the second larges  dam - the Impofu - bringing the average down as it was at 60% of capacity.
