A four-year-old girl from the small town of Dewetsdorp in the Free State is missing after her two cousins allegedly abandoned the child while she rested under a tree on Monday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thabo Covane says it is alleged that Reitumetse Madibeng and her two cousins, aged 19 and 20 left their home in nearby Kinana and started making their way to a nearby farm along the R702.

He says Reitumetse became tired from walking and decided to rest under a tree by the roadside towards Daspoort.

It is alleged that her two cousins just left her there and continued walking to the farm.

Covane says when the cousins arrived they informed the mother that the child was left under the tree and she immediately informed police.

He says a search team has since been established but unfortunately, there is still no sign of her.

Police also do not have a photograph of Reitumetse at this time.

The two cousins were arrested and will appear in court soon on charges of child neglect.
