The Hawks in the Eastern Cape said a 30-year-old man from Margate in KwaZulu Natal is under police guard in hospital following a foiled cash-in-transit heist on Monday.
Spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, said he was apparently wounded by an accomplice when three men fired shots at G4S security personnel who had collected money from the Siyaphambili Hotel and Bar in Elliotdale.
She said one of the suspects had grabbed the box containing money but was reportedly shot accidentally by one of his accomplices and he fell next to the cash box.
Mgolodela said the two other men fled into nearby bushes and the wounded suspect was taken into custody by members of a multi-disciplinary task team.
The money was recovered and ammunition and a 9mm pistol which was robbed from a security guard in Komani in September, were also found on the scene.
Mgolodela said the suspect will appear in court when discharged, while police are continuing the search for his two accomplices.
