An eviction order booting the Khoisan community from the Union Buildings in Pretoria was enforced on Monday.
Authorities broke down the structures of King Khoisan SA and his followers, in line with an eviction order granted by the Pretoria High Court on 11 December.
The group has been occupying the grassy area of the Union Buildings in a bid to be formally recognised as the first people of South Africa for nearly seven years.
The enforcement of the order comes in the wake of the burial of Queen Khoisan SA, Cynthia Triegardt, who died in a car accident on the N9 between Colesburg and Noupoort on 10 January.
King Khoisan SA has since been released from hospital and is recovering at his home in Gqeberha.
He has been unable to return to the Union Buildings following the death of his wife.
The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure said in a statement that no appeal or opposition has been received against the order by any interested parties.
Spokesperson, Lennox Mabaso said while the department expresses its sympathy with the serious grievances of the Khoisan community, no single person has the right to claim or occupy public space intended to be used and enjoyed by all South Africans.
"South Africa is a society based on the rule of law, and legitimate concerns should therefore be addressed through the proper legislated channels.
"The Department worked and consulted with all stakeholders, including other government departments and the City of Tshwane, before the order was enforced to assist all individuals who were willing to return home."
