Around 600 disgruntled Green Valley residents barricaded all roads in and out of Wittedrift, just outside Plettenberg Bay on Monday morning, as they protested against the lack of service delivery in the area.
Residents blocked the roads with tree branches which they set alight.
Several police units, traffic officials and Bitou law enforcement officers responded, and residents were given a final warning to disperse.
When the crowd did not, police used stun grenades and fire fighters were sent in to douse the flames.
The police action was met with hostility and several protesters started pelting police and their vehicles with rocks.
The protesters later moved off the streets where a community leader addressed them, and the roads were reopened shortly thereafter.
A memorandum with their grievances was also handed to municipal representatives.
