Eastern Cape police have lauded law enforcement officials from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment for the sterling work that led to the recovery of abalone units valued over R3.3-million during operations conducted in the province last week.
Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said for the period between 24 to 30 June, 824 suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from contravention of the Marine Living Resources Act (possession and transportation of abalone) to dealing in illicit drugs.
Lt. Col. Mawisa added that 58,989 disruptive operations were conducted from Shanela to Paseka operations for the same period.
"Operation Paseka confiscated abalone units valued at R3.3-million,16 unlicensed firearms were seized and 11 motorists were nabbed for drunk driving," she said.
Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Zithulele Dladla, commended the foot soldiers for their efforts, "ensuring the safety and security of our communities, and simultaneously protecting endangered species".
"Operation Shanela is gaining momentum and criminals were not given the space to carry out their devious deeds," Dladla added.
