It was a morning of high drama in Dutywa in the Eastern Cape on Friday when employees at the local post office were held hostage by two armed robbers.
Post Office spokesperson Johan Kruger said the workers were eventually freed after being held hostage from around 9 am for more than two hours.
The branch manager was the last person to be freed around noon.
Kruger said four robbers stormed into the post office and when police arrived, two of them managed to flee.
Police then started negotiating with the remaining two robbers who were holding the workers' hostage.
He said they were released unharmed and the remaining two robbers arrested.
"The Post Office can confirm that all the staff members at the Dutywa post office were released physically unharmed after they were held hostage by two armed robbers this morning. The Post Office has arranged trauma counselling for all the employees involved," said Kruger.
He said the Post Office commended the police officers who were involved in the hostage drama.
"We also have to commend the task force and the negotiators of the SA Police for the sterling job they did and for their professionalism. We are very, very thankful that our colleagues came through this unharmed."
