Homeless person kicked to death still not identified

A homeless person kicked to death in the streets of Central in Gqeberha is still not identified.

The man, believed to be in his fifties was attacked last week while sleeping with other vagrants in front of a fast food outlet in Rink Street.

Five suspects were arrested just minutes after the attack at a petrol station just meters from the crime scene.

The men made their first appearance in the city's Magistrates Court on Tuesday after spending five days behind bars.

The spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Luxolo Tyali says the matter was postponed to the 21st of June for bail proceedings to get underway.

He says Zolani Ngqondu,32, Vuyolwethu Duze-Mbule 31, Metusi Tuzana 34, Ludumo Tuzana, 34 and Mabandla Madlingozi, 35, will all face a charge of murder.

Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg from the police said if anybody can assist the police in identifying the victim, they should come forward so that an attempt can be made to trace his next of kin.

Several homeless people who have been sleeping at this spot for years have not returned to the area since the brutal attack.
