Police in Gqeberha appealed to the public on Saturday for any information that could assist the probe into the murder of an Imam from Cape Town.
Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, identified the deceased as 58-year-old Moegsien Hendricks.
She said the shooting occurred in Extension 24 in Bethelsdorp at around 10 am.
Janse Van Rensburg said Imam Hendricks and a driver were in a gold-coloured VW T-Roc in Hayley Place when a Hilux double-cab bakkie stopped in front of them, blocking their path.
She said unknown suspects, with their faces covered, got out and fired multiple shots at the car before fleeing.
Hendricks was sitting in the back of the vehicle when he was killed.
Janse Van Rensburg said the motive for the murder is unknown at this stage and forms part of the ongoing investigation.
