Nelson Mandela Bay metro police have arrested two suspects who were caught stealing cables.

Acting metro police commissioner, Advocate. Andrew Moses, commended the community of Algoa Park for swiftly reporting the incident.

In a statement on Wednesday, Moses said the suspects were spotted damaging essential infrastructure on the corner of Uitenhage Road and Algoa Street on Tuesday evening and were caught with a 30-meter-long cable.

He said they were charged with causing damage to essential infrastructure and for being in possession of suspected stolen property.

"This is essentially what we want more of from our communities, residents must not keep quiet when they see people damaging infrastructure, whether you stay in the area or not, you must report when you see a crime being committed," says Moses.

He also applauded the operational response members and residents for alerting Metro Police to the crime saying it was the vigilance of the community members that led to the arrests and recovery of the cable.

Residents can report crime to SAPS or NMBM Metro control room on 041 585 555 or 041508 5501.
