Gqeberha man convicted of RAF fraud

File

A 51-year-old man was found guilty in the Gqeberha Regional New Law of defrauding the Road Accident Fund of R460 000.

Hawks Eastern Cape spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, said Phelisile Ngqina, was convicted on Tuesday for submitting a false RAF claim back in 2016.

She said submitted a claim via his lawyer, alleging that he was injured in an accident on the N2 freeway near Cotswold on 17 January 2014, in which the driver had died.

Captain Mgolodela said a subsequent investigation revealed that the accident never occurred and that the supposed driver had denied being involved in any accident or having a driver’s licence.

She said the matter was reported to the Hawks and that hospital records indicated that

Nqina had been admitted for treatment for an assault.

Sentencing proceedings will commence on 25 April.
