The humanitarian organisation, Gift of the Givers, has stepped in to assist various Eastern Cape communities who were badly affected by recent storms.
Spokesperson, Ali Sablay, said they had been inundated with calls for assistance after storms caused damage in the Elundini, Senqu, Walter Sisulu, Amahlathi and Great Kei local municipalities, as well as the Chris Hani, and Amathole district municipalities.
He said that infrastructure had been severely affected, with electricity cut off in certain areas, while roads were washed away, and water treatment plants affected in others.
Sablay said some residents suffered injuries when their homes were partially or completely flattened.
He said Gift of the Givers, sent teams to the Joe Gqabi district municipality to deliver emergency food supplies, blankets, and sleeping mats to the families affected.
“Disaster management teams are on the ground to assess the areas affected and the extent of the damage.
“Gift of the Givers teams are working closely with the Eastern Cape Provincial and local disaster risk management teams to assess the areas affected,” he said.
