Supplied

Rescue and recovery efforts continued at the site of the collapsed building in George with the toll now at 16 according to the latest update at 9 am.

Police Minister Bheki Cele is expected to visit the site on Sunday.

The Joint Operations District Centre has also called for professional psychosocial support practitioners who are proficient in Chewa, Portuguese, and Shona languages to assist the survivors and their families.

Anyone who can assist should contact Kholiswa Jobela at 078 210 5972 or Apolus Swart at 061 504 4205.

The JODC also reiterated its adherence to "a stringent double verification protocol to ensure the accuracy of the reported numbers. This is done in close collaboration with recovery teams, hospitals, and forensic services."

Meanwhile, according to the latest figures, 45 people were rescued while 14 remain in hospital.

Authorities said there were 81 people on the construction when it collapsed last Monday, while 36 people remain unaccounted for.
