Gauteng teen missing at sea in Port Alfred

File

The National Sea Rescue Institute said a search was conducted at East Beach in Port Alfred on Thursday for a teenager who went missing at sea.

NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, said the 16-year-old was swimming with a group of friends from Soweto when he went missing.

He said the NSRI rescue craft, Spirit of Kenton, rescue swimmers, the police, and municipal authorities responded to the scene.

Lambinon said it appeared that the group of teenagers and their two carers, who are their coaches, had reportedly gone down to the beach for a swim.

He said they were in Port Alfred for a sporting event.

“While swimming, the teenager is suspected to have gone missing in the water, and the alarm was raised.

“Police K9 Search and Rescue are activated to continue in an ongoing search and a missing persons case has been opened by Police who are coordinating efforts.

“Despite an extensive sea and shoreline search, there remains no sign of the missing teenager,” Lambinon said.

He said their thoughts, care, and compassion, are with the family and friends of the missing teenager in this difficult time.
