The Hawks in the Eastern Cape have confirmed that Nelson Mandela Bay Deputy Mayor Gary van Niekerk has been summoned to appear before the city's specialised commercial crimes court next month.
The charges pertain to Van Niekerk allegedly hiring a Bay law firm in June 2022 to assist him with his legal woes.
It is understood that the law firm's bill amounted to more than R500 000.
The provincial spokesperson for the Hawks, Warrant Officer Ndipiwhe Mhlakuvana told Algoa FM News that van Niekerk will appear on charges of Cybercrime and the contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act.
He also confirmed that the summons was served on van Niekerk on Thursday morning and that the court date has been set for 12 December.
