The Eastern Cape Transport Department said five people were killed and ten others injured in a head-on collision between two vehicles on Wednesday evening.
Spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said the crash occurred at around 6 PM on the Sulenkama road in Qumbu.
“A Toyota Fortuna with two occupants from Sulenkama direction collided with a fully loaded Toyota Quantum from Qumbu town.
“At least five occupants (3 females and 2 males) from the mini-bus taxi, including the driver, died on the scene,” he said.
Binqose said the injured, including both occupants of the Fortuna and eight passengers from the mini-bus, were taken to the Sulenkama and Nelson Mandela Academic Hospitals for medical attention.
The circumstances surrounding the cause of the crash are still unknown at this stage.
Binqose said a case of culpable homicide has been opened by Qumbu police.
