Five people have died in a fire that swept through a Methodist Church mission house in Askeaton locality near Cala in the Eastern Cape.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, said a member of the community alerted the police to the house being ablaze.
He said when police arrived, the house was well alight. He said the firefighters extinguished the blaze, but the family could not be saved.
Kinana said a domestic worker survived the fire and was recovering in a hospital.
Meanwhile, in a subsequent statement, Eastern Cape Premier, Oscar Mabuyane, identified the deceased as 46-year-old Reverend Mandisi Mpthiti, his wife 29-year-old wife Dunyiswa, and their three children five-year-old Khololwetu, three-year-old Zimi, and Yololwetu just 11 months.
Police said the circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation and an inquest docket has been registered.
