Police have arrested five people following protests today by residents of Walmer Township in Port Elizabeth.
Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, says two were arrested on charges of public violence while three others were arrested for looting and malicious damage to property.
She says four people were reportedly injured, including a policeman who wounded himself in the foot with his shotgun during the chaos which ensued when police moved in to disperse a large crowd outside the Walmer police station.
Janse Van Rensburg says the situation has quietened down but police will continue to monitor the situation.
Meanwhile, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality officials met with the protestors today again.
Spokesperson, Roland Williams, says three councillors and other Municipal officials held a briefing with community representatives on Thursday.
He said members of the business chamber, Nafcoco were also present.
Wiilams said "all areas of service delivery concern were duly noted by the Municipal representatives and actions for each of these items were pronounced upon."
The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber has also issued an urgent appeal to mayor, Danny Jordaan and the Metro's political leadership of the Metro to intervene urgently to bring the current impasse under control and return stability to the area.
CEO Kevin Hustler also condemned the actions of the protestors whose actions forced the closure of businesses in parts of Walmer today.
