A father and son who were arrested in connection with the seizure of 7388 units of abalone made a brief appearance in the Gelvandale Magistrate's court on Monday.
The abalone and a bakkie with a total value of R1.8 million were confiscated when Krishna Chetty and his son Seshen were arrested at a business premises in West End on Friday.
Captain Sandre Janse van Rensburg says they were nabbed by The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment, SANPARKS officials and members of a private security company.
They face charges of contravening the Marine Living Resources Act.
59-year old Krishna Chetty was granted bail of R20 000 while his 30-year-old son was denied bail.
They will be back in court next Monday.
