Gqeberha police said that a shooting incident in Schauderville on Wednesday in which a man was fatally wounded, was not related to the election.
This followed an earlier report that the incident occurred at a voting station.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said officers were following up on a report of shots being fired in the area on Tuesday night when they came upon a suspect in Lawler Street fitting the description.
She said he fled after spotting the police, and during a foot chase, he fired at the policeman who was in pursuit.
Naidu said the officer returned fire, fatally wounding the man.
She said Public Order Police used rubber bullets and stun grenades to disperse a crowd that became unruly.
The deceased was identified as 28-year-old Kurtley Gawie.
Meanwhile, in another reported incident in Schauderville on Wednesday, police said 29-year-old Evandre Petrus, was killed after he and a friend came under fire from suspected rival gang members on the corners of Fitchardt and Standford Road.
Naidu said the incident occurred at around 8 AM. She said Petrus' friend escaped unharmed.
"The incident is gang-related and not election-related," Naidu said.
She said 27-year-old suspect was subsequently detained on a charge of murder and attempted murder.
