An East London police captain appeared in the city’s Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday in connection with the alleged theft of R1.3 million.
Captain Ntombekhaya August, an employee of Crime Intelligence, is accused of stealing the money from their offices earlier this month.
The 49-year-old was arrested by the East London-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation team of the Hawks, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, just five days after the incident on January 10.
Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Avele Fumba said an unidentified man entered the Crime Intelligence Offices under the pretence of visiting August. Once inside, the suspect reportedly revealed a firearm, handed her a school bag, and demanded money. He allegedly walked out with over R1 million after August complied.
Following the swift investigation by the Hawks, August was apprehended and charged with theft.
The officer, who had been in custody since her arrest, was granted bail of R4,000 on Wednesday.
Fumba said the case had been postponed to March 4 for further investigation.
