EL man arrest for possession of child pornography - granted bail

A 52-year-old man from East London facing child pornography charges was granted bail of R5 000 in the City's Magistrate Court on Thursday.

The man, who cannot be named as he has not yet pleaded, was arrested on 5 March in a joint international operation with Homeland Security in the United States.

His bail application was unopposed by the state.

Police are still in the process of trying to identify the victims in the hundreds of images found on his devices.

The matter was postponed to the 28th of May.

Meanwhile, in Mossel Bay, another suspect believed to be part of the 27 arrested suspects continued his bail hearing on Wednesday.

Captain Shaun van der Heever from the South African Police Investigative Psychology Unit testified in court stating that the images were exceptionally gruesome.

A total of nine electronic devices were confiscated from the suspect's home in Da Nova last month where police found over a million images they are busy sifting through.

Van der Heever told the court that all of the photos were of adult men with toddler girls.

He said it was highly unlikely for the suspect to stop what he was doing when released on bail.

None of the victims on the phone have been identified.

The matter was postponed to the 3rd of April.
