A 35-year-old man will appear in court in East London on Monday for being in the possession of stolen copper cable.

Captain Hazel Mqala said he was arrested yesterday by members of the East London Rapid Rail Police Unit who were busy with destabilisation duties in Buffalo City Metro.

She said at around 04.20 on Friday, while members were in Quigney they spotted a suspicious male busy digging and went to investigate.

"Two of the three male suspects immediately fled the scene and the members managed to apprehend one with a huge quantity of copper cable," Mqala said.

According to the Buffalo City Metro Technician, the estimated value of the copper including the damage R110 000.

She said the suspect will appear before East London Magistrate Court on Monday on charges of malicious damage to property and essential infrastructure as well as the theft of copper cables.
