The Eastern Cape welcomed 200 New Year’s Day babies, with the first being a boy who was born shortly after midnight on Monday at Mount Ayliff Hospital.
Last year, 239 babies were born on 1 January.
Health Department spokesperson, Siswe Kupelo says 104 girls and 96 boys were delivered at public health facilities.
Health MEC, Nomakhosazana Meth visited New Year’s Day babies at Dora Nginza Hospital in Gqeberha and handed over care packs.
She said she was, however, concerned that young girls continued to fall pregnant and gave birth every year.
"We are calling on everyone to play their part in fighting unplanned pregnancy and teenage pregnancy", the MEC said.
Of the new mothers, 49 are girls aged between 14 and 19 while 151 are women aged 20 and older.
