The Eastern Cape Department of Transport appealed to motorists and other road users to be extra vigilant this weekend as “the weather forecast for this weekend makes for heightened concern for road crashes”.

Department spokesperson, Unathi Binqoise, said the steady rain resulted in several accidents across the province, including a fatal crash on the N2.

He said two people were killed when a fully-laden mini-bus overturned on near Bulurha just outside East London towards Butterworth.  Twelve other passengers were injured.

“Wet and slippery conditions with poor visibility in some parts of the province have been cited as the contributing factor to the crashes reported thus far. And the call for vigilance is aimed at arresting any other possible crashes that may occur,” Binqose said.

Transport MEC, Xolile Nqatha also said there will be “high visibility” of traffic law enforcement officers to ensure that law and order is upheld.

"Our law enforcement officers will be strategically placed to ensure the safety of road users. We will be working very closely with all the rapid response teams, and we’ll remain on high alert for any challenge that may arise,” said MEC Nqatha.

The Department said it would  also keep a close eye on the province’s mountain passes for any possible incidents of rockfalls and mudslides.
