A 39-year-old Eastern Cape correctional services officer appeared in court on Tuesday for a brutal knife attack on his girlfriend last week, and the assault of her domestic worker.
The National Prosecuting Authority said Kakuhle Mpongoma, who works at the Wellington Correctional Centre in Mthatha, faces charges of attempted murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
“The accused allegedly stabbed his girlfriend more than 25 times all over her body and assaulted his girlfriend’s domestic worker,” said NPA regional spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali.
He said the woman is in the intensive care unit in hospital and is unable to speak.
Tyali said the attack on the two women last weekend was allegedly witnessed by the couple’s nine-year-old son.
“The case has been postponed to 11 March for a formal bail application which will be opposed by the state,” he said.
