An Eastern Cape police detective, accused of raping a minor, will remain in custody after he was denied bail at his second appearance in the Komga Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
The Department of Community Safety says the 45-year-old suspect was meant to investigate an assault case the 17- year-old girl had opened against her boyfriend.
It is alleged that the detective victimised her, but the teenager fought back and managed to break free and reported the incident.
Community Safety MEC, Xolile Nqatha has welcomed the court decision, calling for a successful prosecution and justice for the girl and many other victims of gender-based violence.
The MEC will be in Mthatha on Thursday, for an inter-governmental imbizo, aimed at dealing with the high crime rate in the city
