Eastern Cape police are investigating the murder of a female police officer and another person during a shooting incident in West Bank on Sunday.
Provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nomthetheleli Mene has expressed her shock and sadness at the tragic killings.
Police said the slain officer and her colleagues were on duty when their police vehicle suffered a puncture while they were travelling on Settlers Way.
Spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, said a passing motorist who stopped to help the officers allowed them to sit in his car while they waited for assistance from SAPS colleagues.
“While the members were seated in the vehicle, a BMW stopped next to them and fired shots at the vehicle.
“The 38-year-old Sergeant stationed at SAPS Kidds Beach, and the 50-year-old motorist were fatally shot while two other police officials, a reservist Sergeant and a Constable, escaped unharmed,” she said.
Mawisa said the suspects sped off and remain at large.
She said the motive for the shooting is yet to be established and two cases of murder and two of attempted murder are under investigation.
The names of the deceased have not yet been released.
Provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General, Nomthethelele Mene, bemoaned the untimely and senseless death murders, appealing to the public for information that could assist the probe.
