EC nurse in court for university enrolment scam

The Hawks said that a male nurse appeared in the Mthatha Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Friday on charges of fraud and corruption.

Twenty-seven-year-old Luthuli Sihle is accused of duping a family out of R25 000 in an admission’s scam he allegedly perpetrated at Walter Sisulu University’s Health and Science faculty in Mthatha last March.

He said the complainants went to the university to get their child enrolled when they encountered the accused.

Hawks’ spokesperson, Warrant-Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, said at the time, Sihle was apparently “on duty” as an SRC member, and offered to assist the family with the enrolment for a reported sum of money.

“After some time, the parents established that their child was not registered in the university system as there was no space,” he said.

The matter was reported to WSU management, and it was later referred to the Hawks for investigation.

Mhlakuvana said Sihle was released on R2000 bail, and the matter postponed to 7 October.
