An Eastern Cape man who was arrested following a shootout with the police in Laudium in Pretoria, abandoned his bid for bail when he appeared in court on Thursday.
The National Prosecuting Authority said 22-year-old Ayanda Nombebe, who hails from the Khalankomo village in the Eastern Cape, appeared in the Atteridgeville magistrate’s court where he faces multiple charges including six counts of murder.
The murder charges relate the deaths of his alleged accomplices, who were killed in a shootout with police who were following up on a tip-off about a planned cash-in-transit heist.
NPA spokesperson, Lumka Mahanjana, said Nombebe, also faces two counts of attempted murder, five counts of possession of unlicensed firearms, as well as the possession of ammunition, and conspiracy to commit robbery with aggravating circumstances.
He allegedly fled to a nearby house during the February shootout, where he was arrested.
Nombembe remains in custody until his next court appearance in the regional court on 26 March.
