EC man gets R1 500 bail in kidnapping case

An Eastern Cape man arrested for kidnapping a foreign national shop owner in Dordrecht has been granted bail of R1 500.

The Hawks said 26-year-old Maliphakame Mkorwana, appeared in court in Dordrecht on Monday following his earlier arrest in Mdantsane in East London.

Spokesperson, Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana said this related to the kidnapping of a foreign national at his shop in the town on 17 July by four men.

He said the victim was forced into a vehicle and was held for several days.

Mhlakuvana said during this time the suspects withdrew R8 000 from his bank account and also bought clothing valued at R27 000.

Mkorwana made several court appearances before being granted bail and he will be back in court again on 25 January.
