Eastern Cape Health MEC, Ntandokazi Capa, says she was shocked to learn of the fatal shooting of a nurse, allegedly by her boyfriend who is an EMS client information officer.
The MEC said the incident happened on Sunday in eMaxesibeni, formerly Mount Aylliff.
MEC Capa said the deceased was based at the Rode Clinic, while the boyfriend was stationed at the eMaxesibeni EMS base.
She said the boyfriend turned the gun on himself after the incident and is in a critical condition in hospital.
They were both off duty at the time of the incident.
“We want to send our heartfelt condolences to the family of the professional nurse. We also wish the Client Information Officer a speedy recovery so that if he is found to be guilty, he will face the full might of the law.
“We are saddened by this unfortunate incident that has robbed us of a dedicated healthcare worker. We are more concerned that this act of alleged gender-based violence is happening during Women’s Month,” said MEC Capa.
She said EMS personnel were the first to arrive on the scene with the police arriving soon after.
