EC child to undergo life changing surgery

A 4 year old Humansdorp boy will undergo life changing surgery on Tuesday, when the Smile Foundation will correct his very rare medical condition.

The Operations Executive Director for the Smile foundation Moira Gerszt says little France Cumbana has a rare facial condition called Pierre Robin Sequence and therefore has never been able to breath, speak or eat properly.

But over the next six weeks, France's life will be transformed for the better as he undergoes a truly life-changing surgical procedure, made possible through the generous funding of Port Elizabeth International Airport and the support of Smile Foundation.

Gerszt says the surgical team, headed up by Dr. Chris van der Walt of the Port Elizabeth Provincial Hospital, is always enthusiastic in its efforts to assist South African children who need reconstructive surgery.

This process offers a sustainable support for the children and families involved, with surgery and psychological counselling being made available, as well as education relating to the hospital process.

The foundation will perform a total of 26 operations in the city over then next 4 days.
