Dog rescued from mountainous area after owner killed in car crash

A dog from Mossel Bay that went missing after its owners were involved in a fatal car crash on Tuesday was found after a dramatic rescue effort in a mountainous area near Meiringspoort.

The dog, named, Bulletjie, was travelling with its owners, Tertius and Rina Calitz, to Pretoria when they were involved in an accident at Dubbeldrift early in the morning.

However, the wreckage of the single-vehicle accident was only discovered at around 13:00 that afternoon.

Sadly, Tertius died in the accident, while Rina was taken to a hospital where she was later discharged.

However, Bulletjie was missing.

The Oudtshoorn Dogs In Need received a call from one of its supporters, Lee-Ann Johnson after she saw a black and white dog while driving through Meiringspoort.

The organisation’s general manager, Marlene Mennie and employee, Patrick Zemba, then drove from Oudtshoorn to Meiringspoort and started to search for Bulletjie.

According to them, Zemba looked up towards the mountain and spotted the little dog sitting on a rock in a crevice in the pouring rain and mist.

Mennie says the river also started to come down and the water was flowing strongly.

"Bulletjie didn't want us to take him and he bit us. He then jumped into the river."

She says they managed to get hold of him by standing on a tree stump and got him out of the river.

Mennie and Zemba then wrapped Bulletjie in warm blankets and gave him food and water.

He was reunited with Rina during an emotional welcome at the Oudtshoorn Dogs In Need Kennels on Tuesday afternoon.

The cause of the accident is not yet known.
