Death toll continues to rise in George building collapse

The death toll in the George building collapse tragedy on Friday afternoon rose to 12

This, after three more bodies were retrieved from the rubble earlier in the day.

The George Municipality also confirmed the death of one patient who was in a critical condition in hospital.

Chief Director for Disaster Management, Colin Deiner said they managed to get hold of the developer who was interviewed by the South African Police Service.

He said while he could not speak about all the discussions they had, he did give vital information to indicate where victims could be located, which resulted in the retrieval of the three people.

Meanwhile, authorities had started with the identification process of the deceased, taking fingerprints and DNA testing and looking at photographs.

Interpreters have also been brought in to assist, as there is a language barrier with some of the families.

Some patients were moved to Cape Town for specialist care while others were being treated at George Provincial Hospital and George Medi-clinic.

Earlier on Friday the disaster site was also declared a no-fly zone following reports that a private drone was flying over the rescue zone on Victoria Street on Thursday.

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) said the restriction would be strictly enforced, and any individuals found violating it would be subject to criminal prosecution.

Forty-one people were still unaccounted for on Friday afternoon.
