DA promises harsh action against Bhanga if he's found guilty of transgressing party rules - Mazzone

The DA said that no stone will be left unturned with respect to an investigation into a fatal accident involving the bodyguard of DA Eastern Cape leader, Nqaba Bhanga.

That's according to Natasha Mazzone, the Deputy Chairperson of the DA's Federal Council, in an interview on ENCAs Politburo broadcast on Sunday.

"If he has been found to have transgressed any element of the rules (DA rules), as mayor Athol Trollip has said and as Nqaba Bhanga has said, he is willing to face the music," Mazzone said.

She told the interviewer, Xoli Mngambi that "Bhanga was not someone who was trying to run away from responsibility" adding that "if there is found to be a transgression he will be held accountable in the harshest possible way."

"He himself has said that mayor Trollip has said that."

Mazzone admitted that no disciplinary hearing was held for Bhanga with respect to the fatal accident that his bodyguard was involved last October in which two people were killed.

Bhanga, who was reportedly at a shebeen at the time had allegedly sent his bodyguard in his official car in the early hours of the morning to pick up his girlfriend from one of the residences at Nelson Mandela University.  The bodyguard was later involved in a fatal accident in Algoa Park in which two people were killed.

Mazzone told the Politburo that she came into office in the middle of April and was therefore not aware of what actions had been taken against Bhanga since then, adding that she does not get involved with issues that are addressed by the DA's Federal Legal Council.

Explaining her role in the Federal Council, Mazzone said she and James Selfe are responsible for communicating with the media on court actions, but she said she does not speak for the FLC, which she said: "is the judiciary of the DA and must be respected to do its work".

Responding to a question from journalist Xola Mngambi, Mazzone said she was aware that certain investigations had been done, but she was not aware of the current status of those investigations into the Bhanga matter.

Mazzone said as the Provincial leader of the DA in the Eastern Cape, Bhanga and Trollip are on record as saying that "if there's been any transgression absolutely everything will be done to make sure that it is investigated fully.

She said that she did not know the "intricate" details of the case" but said that knowing "the government in Port Elizabeth, not one stone will be left unturned and knowing Nqaba Bhanga to be the leader that I know him to be, if he has done something wrong, he himself will submit himself to face the music," she said.
